EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – House-rattling twisters, flying monkeys, broom-wielding witches and green-haired oompa loompas came to life in Bronxville this weekend, as Eastchester elementary students performed in Young at Arts’ production of “The Wizard of Oz.”

Second through fifth grade students from Anne Hutchinson and Greenvale Elementary School performed the popular play for sold out crowds on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at Christ Church in Bronxville.

Young at Arts is a non-profit organization that provides an after school and theater program for children up to 12th grade who reside in southern Westchester County and the Bronx.

Under the direction of Sharyn Pirtle – an instructor and creative director for Young at Arts – the students brought the story of Dorothy and her voyage down the Yellow Brick Road to the stage in front of elaborate sets that were designed by volunteers who work on Broadway productions.

The ensemble cast included more than 30 students from the two schools. Caroline Richardson was the protagonist Dorothy, with Holland Cogan serving as the Scarecrow, Alex Rosado as the Cowardly Lion and Jenna Ginsburg as the Tinman.

“Participants in the musical, part of the Eastchester PTA’s afterschool clubs, ranged in age from second to fifth grade,” Ken Richardson, the director for special projects at Christ Church, said. “The students learned about drama, music and dance during the six months leading up to their sold out performances.”
