Eastchester Elder Statesman Contributes 100th Pint Of Blood For Community

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. - The Eastchester High School Student Government ran another successful blood drive, highlighted by one of the community’s elder statesmen.

Last week, 84-year-old Eastchester-native Joseph “Joe” Mamanna donated his 100th pint of blood, making him “one of the most committed blood donors, (who) never misses the opportunity to make a contribution,” according to the American Red Cross, who assisted with the student-run blood drive.

Mamanna's blood contribution alone is expected to help upwards of 300 Westchester County residents in need.

A retired construction carpenter and former union treasurer, Mamanna has long been a community advocate for his town. He was the commander of the Eastchester Veterans of Foreign Wars and is the current Commander of the American Legion. He is an active member of the Bugles Across America Program, which plays “Taps” at funerals and wakes who has served with the Marines in the Korean War.
