Skyliners Juniors Place Fifth in Challenge Cup

The Skyliners Synchronized Skating Club’s Junior line completed its successful season by finishing fifth at the Junior World Challenge Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden on March 16 and 17.

The JWCC is the preeminent synchronized skating competition in the world. Eighteen teams from 13 countries competed in the championship, sanctioned by the International Skating Union. Competing as Team USA 1, the Skyliners skated a strong performance Friday of their short program, set to the music of Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory."  Their score of 47.21 points placed them fifth against the strong international competition and only 2.7 points out of third place.

"I am pleased with the way they skated tonight and to be in fifth place puts them in a good position going into the free skate,” Skyliners Head Coach Josh Babb said about Friday’s skate. The competition's free skate finale was on Saturday and the Skyliners skated to music from the movie “The Black Swan”. Their free skate was awarded 92.76 points for a total score of 139.97 points, placing the Skyliners in fifth position behind two teams from Finland in first and second place with Canada's Les Supremes was awarded the bronze. The other member of the Team USA's delegation, Team Braemar of Braemar, Minn., took fourth.

The Skyliners Junior line team members included Peyton Delgorio (Croton-on-Hudson), Jennifer Schwartzman (Katonah), Lindsey Klein (Manhasset, L.I.), Nicole Vitale (Ossining), Sennett Cooke (Pelham), Jillian Longo (Scarsdale), Stevie-Lynn Angiolillo (White Plains) and Holly Farkus (White Plains).

"I am very proud of my skaters for all of their hard work this season. To be recognized as the fifth best team in the world is a wonderful accomplishment," Babb said. The Skyliners competed at the JWCC as Team USA 1 because they won the Junior World Selection Competition in January.

Clinics and tryouts for the 2012-2013 season start in mid-March and run through April 15.  Visit the Skyliners' website for specific dates and to learn more about the team.
