SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- Each time Shannon Scavelli takes the field she is capable of breaking a game wide open with her scoring touch. The senior demonstrated this ability, Tuesday, scoring five goals as Lakeland opened the field hockey season with a 9-3 win over visiting Ossining.
The Hornets are the two-time defending Section 1 and New York State Class B champions. Lakeland and Ossining played for the 2011 Hudson Valley Summer Field Hockey League title last month with the Hornets winning. Emma Bozek added two goals and three assists, Kristen Conroy finished with a goal and an assist and Stephanie Scala scored a goal. Lakeland led, 7-1 at halftime. Molly Malone scored twice and Zoe Fendrich had the other Ossining goal.
