Roediger Pin Propels Somers to Wrestling Title

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - Luke Roediger thought his day was over just after it began on Saturday.

The Somers’ 113-pounder sustained an injury in his first match of the day at the Ninth annual Yorktown Holiday Wrestling Classic. Following the win, Roediger wanted to continue wrestling, but was instructed by Somers’ coach William Von Tobel to sit out the remainder of pool wrestling.

Roediger did so, begrudgingly, but was hopeful he would return for the title match. After resting, the sophomore returned to the mat for the final, against Yorktown and recorded the decisive win. Roediger’s pin in the 113-pound match gave Somers the lead for good in a 37-34 triumph over Yorktown.

Somers finished the day 6-0. Four-time Section 1 and two-time state champion Brian Realbuto was named the Scott Hauser most outstanding wrestler. John Jay-Cross River’s LouisTalia was chosen for the Matt Zeller sportsmanship award.

Ossining defeated Croton, 49-25 in the third-place match.

Roediger, who was leading 6-1, pinned Chris Varian 39 seconds into the second period. That gave Somers a 31-28 lead and Dylan Realbuto sealed it with a first-period pin in the 120-pound bout.

“When I wasn’t wrestling I was doing pushups because I wanted to make sure I kept my strength up and I also spared with Dylan,” Roediger said. “Once I got on the mat, my adrenaline got going.”

Brian Realbuto was impressed with his teammate. The senior and captain kept Roediger relaxed by talking to his teammate throughout the sophomore’s down time.

“Luke has made such an improvement, even from the beginning of the year,” said the undefeated Realbuto. “He’s been wrestling real tough and has really stepped up for us. “I am glad for him and all of the guys because they have all been working hard in the room. The team has really come together.”
