Panas, Hen Hud Face Off In Boys' Basketball Playoffs

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – The 13th-seeded Walter Panas High School boys' basketball team will begin its pursuit of a section championship when it hosts nearby Hendrick Hudson in the outbracket round of the Class A playoffs at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Panas enters the postseason on quite a hot streak as the Panthers won nine of 10 games to close out the regular season and capture a share of the league title with Peekskill. The team finished the season with a 12-6 record after starting 3-5. The Panthers’ best win came Jan. 8 against Peekskill.

Vaughn Dweck has been the catalyst for Panas all season and consistently has put up double-digit points in each game. His 6’3” frame has helped him pull down rebounds when necessary, as well. In the upset against Peekskill, the senior guard poured in 31 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished five assists.

He has not been the only key piece for Panas. Senior forward Lylle Ryals, who stands at 6’5”, provides a nice compliment to Dweck. Throw in 6’5” senior center Mike McMahon and the Panthers have plenty of size to bother opposing teams in the playoffs.

Hendrick Hudson finished the season with a 6-11 record but ended the season with back-to-back wins against Haldane and Croton-Harmon. Hunter Glashoff was the leading scorer in each of those games as he netted 24 against the Blue Devils and 26 against the Tigers.

If Glashoff can get into an early groove, and if the Sailors can get double-digit point contributions from Kyle Monk and Carson Cole, then Hen Hud has a chance to pull off the upset.

But the Panthers’ size still will be a problem the Sailors must solve.
