Panas Graduate Honovich Grabs Lacrosse Honor

PURCHASE, N.Y. — Casandra Honovich and her Manhattanville College women's lacrosse teammates were basking in the glow of their Freedom Conference-opening win over Arcadia College when she received a bonus.

The sophomore and Walter Panas graduate was selected as the Freedom Conference women's lacrosse player of the week, the program's first winner of the award since 2008. Teammate Emy Cote was chosen the Freedom Conference women's lacrosse goalie of the week.

Honovich scored a game-high eight goals in the 22-12 win over visiting Arcadia last Saturday. Overall, Honovich, a four-year varsity player for coach Sharon Sarsen's Lakeland/Panas team, had 11 goals and three assists in two games.

"I was really shocked when my coaches and teammates texted me," she said of the award. "I was not expecting it because in that game, we all played phenomenally."

Honovich, who leads the team in scoring with 30 goals and five assists, said it felt good to put it all together and get that first conference win, especially at home.

"From our goalie to our defense, to our transition game, this led to our attack," Honovich said. "We were first to the ball, first to get draw control and first to score."

She was even happier for Cote, who came to the team a few days before the Arcadia game and stepped right in. Even though Cote had never played lacrosse before, she knows something about the position: She was the starting goalie on the Manhattanville women's ice hockey team.

"Three days before the game, Emy picked up a stick and asked the coach if she could tryout," Honovich said. "Emy stepped up big time. I was so proud of her."
