Panas Cheer Team Brings Skills to County Center

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The Walter Panas cheer team slogan is “one team, one family” and that spirit was evident Tuesday when the Panthers joined dozens of local cheer teams at the 63rd Westchester Cheerleading Invitational at the County Center.

We’re having a fun time and we hope were going to hit everything in our routine and place,” said Carli Ferrari, one four team captains. “The key is to be confident preparing to get up and get ready for the competition. We are one team, one family, that’s our motivation.”

Panas competed in the Class B division with Scarsdale, Maria Regina, Somers, Ursuline Academy and Harrison Tuesday and showed great form during an enthusiastic routine filled with lifts and stunts. Ursuline won the event with Somers placing second.

Panas coach Faith Powell has been coaching her girls for five years and explained the extensive work cheer teams do to prepare for competition.

“They work daily on flexibility, they have to stretch at home every night to maintain that flexibility,” Powell said. “We actually work in the weight room because the girls have to lift each other. We always kid that we have to be ready for broken noses if we’re not careful because it’s a contact sport.”

Jen Cusack, Marissa Lewis and Vanessa Chatkin are the other Panas captains who each take responsibility for having the team prepared and ready to compete.

“It is fun to work with the other girls as a team,” Cusack said. “But it is a tough sport and it takes lots of work. Being here with all these great teams in fun.”
