OSSINING, N.Y. Jennifer DeMaria, a senior from Walter Panas High School on the Lakeland/Panas gymnastics team, swept every event on Monday to lead her gymnastics team in a victory against Ossining.
Lakeland/Panas bested Ossining 151.5 to 125.25 at Anne M. Dorner Middle School. DeMaria won the vault event with a score of 8.3, the uneven bars with an 8.6, the balance beam with an 8.4 tying her with teammate Liliana Oliviero, the floor exercise with an 8.1 and all-around with a 33.4.
DeMaria said after the win that she was pleased with the win, but knows that there is always room for improvement, both for herself and her team.
Each event, weve got to perfect each routine, DeMaria said. And thats what weve been trying to do.
Ossining coach Sandra Mitchell said she was impressed by DeMarias performance and offered an explanation for her skills.
Shes fabulous. Its to the advantage when you come from a club and all of them actually do come from a club, so you can see the difference, Mitchell said about the difference between, the true high school gymnasts that are just sort of getting the hang of it, and the club gymnasts who are doing it all year round. And shes phenomenal. They were all phenomenal.
