Lakeland/Panas Returns to Class A Lacrosse Final

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Each time Lakeland/Panas began to build on its lead Monday in a Section 1 Class A Girls Lacrosse Championship semifinal, Mamaroneck would surge back.

The top-seeded Rebels were having difficulty with the resilient fourth-seeded Tigers, who closed to within two goals with 16 minutes remaining in the game.

That would be as close as the Tigers would get, though. Alexa Bonnes made sure of that.

The senior scored consecutive goals in a 90-second span and finished with a game-high 11, sending the Rebels to a 24-16 win over the Tigers at Walter Panas High School.

Lakeland/Panas (16-0-2) advances to the Section 1 Class A final for the 12th consecutive year. The Rebels will be going for an unprecedented sixth consecutive championship when they play second-seeded North Rockland at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Suffern Middle School. North Rockland knocked out perennial contender Suffern in the other semifinal.

The Rebels lead 9-7 at halftime, before extending to 13-9 on a Bonnes goal at the 6:03 mark. Goals by Abby Bagelman, who finished with seven on the game, and Jess Corbin brought Mamaroneck within two, at 13-11.

But Bonnes needed just 18 seconds to offset Corbin’s goal. Lakeland/Panas won the draw, and Bonnes raced downfield and scored at 9:07. Ninety seconds later, Bonnes finished off a feed from Emma Bozek.

“The incentive was, this was a semifinal,” said Bonnes, who will attend the University of Connecticut and play lacrosse next year. “We wanted to get back to the final, and everyone stepped up.”

Bozek finished with four goals and three assists, and Molly Fitzpatrick added a hat trick and two assists.

Corbin netted three goals, and Katherine Grinnell added two scores for the Tigers.
