Irvington Football Hosts Croton In Rivertowns Test

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Irvington's tough early-season football schedule continues Saturday when the Bulldogs host Section 1 Class B champion Croton in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

The Bulldogs fell to 0-2 after another tough loss last Saturday, this time to a strong Woodlands team in a game that was close at 16-14 until Woodlands broke free with 16 straight points to earn a 32-14 victory.

Croton (2-0) has won its first two games of the season and defeated longtime local rival Hendrick Hudson 14-6 in a defensive struggle last weekend. The Tigers have had trouble scoring, but have played good defense.

The Bulldogs are led by quarterback Dillon D’Arrigo, who scored one of the team's two touchdowns against Woodlands, and halfback Hunter Gizzi, who had the other Bulldogs score. Irvington has a solid defense, led by John Cofre and Eric Polese, which struggled against a potent Woodlands running game.

Croton's offense is adjusting and growing with first-year quarterback Ben Gelfand, who has help in a veteran backfield with Tyler Wolstencroft and Brian Soares. Matt Gennerelli and Nick Grous lead the defense that has keyed both victories.

Irvington's season hangs on this game and another loss will make a playoff berth tough to accomplish. Croton depends on its defense and will improve on offense as the season goes on.
