NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Sean Barry recalled how close he came to wrestling for the Ted Murphy Shoreline Classic 285-pound title last year.
The Hen Hud senior explained that he lost by one point to New Rochelles Malcolm Allen, the 2011 Section 1 Division I state champion, in the semifinals and finished fourth.
Coming back, this year, I wanted this more than anything, Barry said.
Barry accomplished his goal and did so without much resistance, winning the 285-pound title Saturday at New Rochelle High School.
Barry pinned Fox Lanes Andriy Lypchuk 26 seconds into the second period. This was Barrys second consecutive tournament title. He won the Michael OConnell title during Christmas break.
Hen Hud placed 10th, out of 21 teams, with 81.5 points. Phil Siegel (160 pounds) and Kevin McDermott (132) both finished third and Josh Perlmutter (145) placed fourth.
Barry, who posted an 8-0 major decision of North Rocklands Connor Reigotti in a semifinal, went to work immediately on Lypchuk. He secured a headlock and whipped Lypchuk to his back. Barrys hold was increasingly tight, forcing Lypchuk to tap out to catch his breath. Barry was given six points two points for the takedown, three near-fall points and a point for the tap out.
In the second period, Barry executed the same move, but this time Lypchuk would not extend the match.
When I was a freshman, the seniors used to do that move on me all the time so I know how to counter it and I know how to defend it, Barry said.
