Five Questions for Cortlandt Native, Lakeland AD

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Cortlandt native Dennis Robinson is the athletic director at Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak, just outside Yorktown.

Question: How long have you been the athletic director at your school and how did you step into that role?

Answer: I have been at Lakeland for 41 years and loved every day. I’ve been the athletic director for 16 years. Lakeland has had only four athletic directors in its history. The administration asked me to take the position. I felt I needed to give back to a school district that is one of the best in New York State.

Q: Which sport would you say is more popular at your school? About which sport are the fans most passionate?

A: There is no one sport. It’s a sport program where all are looked at with the most respect. In 2010, we were ranked No. 3 in all sports in the state and our women’s sports were No.1 in the state. We have a spirit committee who really raises the bar to make the schools that visit us feel at home and enjoy their day here.

Q: What is your favorite aspect of your job?

A: I’m around great student athletes. We have great coaches and our administration is always there for us watching young student athletes grow and many going to the next level.

Q: Do you have a particularly fond memory or favorite moment as athletic director?

A: God blessed me to have my children and nieces here with me to watch them grow, and go on to become college athletes. Watching our new facility built, we have one of the best in the state, and the start of the year, watching what it will bring.

Q: What are you most excited about for your athletic program in the coming year?

A: Well each year we want to raise the bar. It may be a new part to the facility. (We) never sit still. What can we do to get better? Our custodian staff did a great job this summer to change some things on our complex. I purchased about 30 pine trees years ago and they grew so quick our fields are the best so our crew shaped them this summer. Be a little better than the past year.
