Croton's Thom, Turner Earn Academic Honors

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Croton High School boys' basketball players Wes Turner and Ian Thom proved to be as successful in the classroom as they were on the court this year. They were named to the 2011-2012 Basketball Coaches Association of New York Academic All-State Team, the school announced Tuesday.

The association annually selects junior and senior varsity players who have maintained a grade-point average of at least 90 percent and have been selected to either first- or second-team in section, league or media all-star teams in their respective state section classification. The coaches selected 35 players statewide, including Thom and Turner, the only two selections from Section 1, which includes Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties.

Thom, a junior guard, scored 17.5 points per game as was named All-Section All-Conference and was named All-League Most Valuable Player, while Turner, a forward, averaged 15.5 points and was named All-Conference and All-League as the duo helped lead the Tigers to the Section 1 Class B semifinals and a record of 17-6.
