Croton Wrestling Pins Dobbs Ferry

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Croton just had victory snatched away, in the final bout, from Irvington in a Section 1 Division II Dual-Meet Championship quarterfinal, Wednesday. The Tigers did not have time to sit around and feel sorry for themselves because they were right back on the mat against Dobbs Ferry. Still stinging from the defeat, Croton rebounded with authority, beating Dobbs Ferry, 57-21. “That showed me a lot,” Croton coach Sam Occhipinti said. “I have seven seniors, including five returning and I know the caliber of kids we have. I knew they would bounce back.” One of his seniors, son, David Occhipinti, had a big win in a matchup of Section 1 Division II champions. Occhipinti, the 2011 125-pound champion, decisioned 2011 119-pound, Jimmy Kyreakedes, 8-7 in the 132-pound bout. Occhipinti scored the first points of the match on a takedown and near fall, worth two points. Kyreakedes entered the third period, trialing, 5-2, but registered an escape and takedown to even the score. An Occhipinti escape and takedown was the difference. “Jimmy is a great wrestler and great kid,” Coach Occhipinti said. “I know they will meet again and when they do, it is going to be a battle.”
