Croton Upsets Woodlands, Heads for County Center

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – The Croton boys basketball, playing as underdog No. 7 seed, upset No. 3 seed Woodlands 56-55 Wednesday to reach the Section 1 Class B Final Four and earn a visit to the Westchester County Center.

“We did some bonding over the weekend and went to the Knicks practice and the guys got to meet Jeremy Lin,” Croton coach Bill Thom said. “The team chemistry is amazing with an unbelievable group of young men.”

Croton (15-5) led 35-31 at halftime but Woodlands pulled back into the game with a 17-11 third quarter run and led 48-46 going into the fourth quarter. The Tigers outscored the Falcins 10-7 in a defensive fourth quarter to earn the win.

Wes Turner scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter to help give the Tigers, who were playing without injured starting guard Aaron Thompson, the early lead.

Andre Scipio led the Falcons with 19 points, but scored just two in the fourth quarter with Thompson’s replacement Jason Howald playing strong defense.

Rob Simmons had 10 points and 10 rebounds, Ian Thom scored 13 points and six assists and reserve Brian Oliver added 10 points for the Tigers.

“Brian Oliver was an unsung here, which shows our depth,” Thom said. “Wes got us going with 16 points in the first quarter and everyone contributed to a great win.”
