Croton to Play Marlboro in State Playoff Game

MAHOPAC, N.Y. -- Croton awoke, and once it did last week, Our Lady of Lourdes did not stand a chance.The Tigers rallied from a seven-point deficit late in the first half with two scores on their way to a 21-7 victory in the Section 1 Class B football title game.Undefeated Croton (9-0) begins its quest for Syracuse and the New York State Class B championship Friday, at 8 p.m., when it takes on Section 9 champion Marlboro (9-1) in a regional semifinal at Mahopac High School.The winner advances to the regional final Saturday afternoon at Dietz Stadium in Kingston, to face the winner of Peru (Section 7)-Schalmont (Section 2).Marlboro is a first-time Section 9 champion after defeating Spackenkill 14-7 in the Section 9 title game.Marlboro’s offense is spearheaded by its quarterback Mike Schoonmaker. He owns a team-leading 925 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns. He is to Marlboro what Jesse Mainiero is to Croton. Marlboro can also turn to running backs Devin Pierre and Cornelius Williams, who have combined for more than 950 yards.Croton’s defense will key on Schoonmaker and either force him to hand off or just swarm him every time he runs. In the Section 1 title game, Max Jones rang up 13 tackles, John Brennan had 11 and Kyle Ricciardi collected 10.Mainiero was held to a season-low 52 yards rushing by Lourdes last week, but the senior responded by going 10 of 19 for 158 yards and two scores, both to Dennis Traditi.
