CORTLANDT, N.Y. Hundreds of young sluggers and family members took themselves out to the ballgame Saturday for opening-day festivities of the Cortlandt American Little League and Cortlandt National Little League.
Seaboldt Field in Montrose was surrounded by gushing parents with cameras, as players from 5-6 T-ball to teenage baseball and softball levels took turns running on to a sparkling diamond, flanked by refurbished batting cages.
"It's a great day," said CNLL President Pete Marra, in his fifth and final season at the helm. "The field looks beautiful. It's in pristine condition. We're ready to go."
A few hours later at St. Columbanus Field, CALL showcased some of its 32 teams and more than 400 players during a ceremony that included a visit by military personnel and Rascal the Raccoon from the Hudson Valley Renegades.
Today is a great day, said CALL President Ron Lyman. We have great weather and we have baseball. That's a recipe for a great day.
Cortlandt Supervisor Linda Puglisi, an avid New York Yankees fan who had helped kick off the CNLL season earlier with Councilman Frank Farrell, wished all the CALL participants luck for a successful season.
"We are all here for our young athletes, boys and girls," she said. "The field looks terrific. Have a great time. Play ball!"
