BUCHANAN, N.Y. -- Jack Attinelly was more nervous taking bows than proving his home-run hitting power last week when he won the Home Run Derby in upstate Cooperstown's All-Star Village, where his Mount Kisco Pro Swing Pride travel baseball team was competing in tournament play.
"I was a little nervous, but I got into a groove and then I thought I had a chance in the championship round," Attinelly said. "I was more scared after I won as the director made me do a victory lap around the stadium with my bat and plaque as all the players were lined up in the field and I had to high-five everyone. I was afraid I was gonna drop the plaque or bat."
The 13-year-old Buchanan slugger took first place in the Home Run Derby skills competition, outhitting players from across the country. Attinelly faced a representative from Texas in the final round and, trailing 7-6, clouted two more home runs to overtake his opponent and claim first prize with a 8-7 win.
While Attinelly was taking the individual home-run title, his Pro Swing Pride also did well in the tournament, posting a 6-2 record as Attinelly slammed four more home runs to lead the offense.
