Walter Panas Inducts Two into Hall of Fame

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y.-- John Zumbach, a long time physical education educator, coach and athletic director at Walter Panas High School, was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame Friday night.

Zumbach, who retired in 2002, started as a physical education teacher in 1970 and has a long list of accomplishments and honors. He was the head football coach for 12 years, starting in 1976, coached the boys varsity swimming and girls varsity swimming for 20 years, was the JV lacrosse coach starting in 1975 and became the Walter Panas High School Athletic Director in 1998, up until his retirement.

“Throughout my 35-year career as an educator, coach, and athletic director, it was my greatest honor to work with the student athletes and coaches of the Lakeland schools,” Zumbach said.

During his time, Zumbach was honored as the Coach of the Year for football in 1981, Coach of the Year for varsity girls swimming in 1998, Coach of the Year again for varsity girls swimming in 2000, and was the 2003 recipient of the lifetime achievement award for swimming.

Although she couldn’t attend the ceremony, Lisa Savage Negvesky was also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Negvesky is a 2001 graduate of Walter Panas, and played both field hockey and lacrosse during her time at Panas. She then went on to play lacrosse at Rutgers, where she was a two-time captain, two time big academic All American, and was inducted into the National Honor Society for athletics. She now works as a behavior analyst.
