Kacey Morabito Receives "Extra Mile" Award

MONTROSE, N.Y. – Kacey Morabito, local radio personality and Hendrick Hudson High School alumna, was honored at Wednesday night's school board meeting. Morabito received the superintendent's "Extra Mile" award for her frequent volunteer work throughout the district.

"If Hendrick Hudson asked me and I'm free, I do it," said Morabito, about the plethora of school programs and functions at which she volunteers, emcees and hosts. Morabito's latest appearance was at the pep rally the night before the Sailors-Tigers football game.

A class of 1979 alumna, Morabito graduated from Hen Hud, and started waiting tables in Peekskill while she attended Mercy College. Morabito had private ambitions to be on the radio, but never announced it until a dishwasher at the restaurant told her the WLNA morning host was seated at one of her tables.

Morabito walked up to then morning show host, Jerry Desmond, and told him she wanted to work in radio. He told her to show up at 5:30 a.m. the next morning. She promptly showed up the next morning and the rest is history.

Morabito's high, distinct voice recounts the tale as if she has told it many times, but admirers in the district don't tire of hearing about a girl from Verplanck from a big Italian family who pushed and prodded her way into the career she always wanted.

Morabito said she often explained to students how lucky they are to grow up in such a supportive environment. About the pep rally she said, "When I listen to them speak, team after team, about how they love their teachers, how they love their coaches, that just touched my heart."

She concluded that perhaps it wasn't the students who were lucky, but the community where they grew up.
