Hendrick Hudson Fields Damaged by Vandals

MONTROSE, N.Y. – Fields at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School are closed due to vandalism sustained over the weekend. School officials said a truck drove through the field hockey, practice football and softball fields located west of the elementary school.

“Vandalism of any kind is unacceptable,” said Daniel McCann, superintendent of schools. “We will repair our fields to a safe playing condition as quickly as possible. If the New York State Police apprehend the individual or individuals involved it is our intent to pursue charges to the fullest extent of the law."

The district anticipates the fields will remain closed until Monday while they are rehabbed for play.

“Currently the fields would not meet the expectations or requirements set forth by game officials for safe play. The fields will need to be rehabbed before athletic events can take place on them again," said Thomas Baker, athletic director. “We are working to minimize the impact these closed fields have on our athletic programs. It is our hope by moving game times we will be able to accommodate most if not all upcoming games on our main field at Hendrick Hudson High School and potentially on the fields at Blue Mountain and Furnace Woods."

The vandalism comes only two weeks before the Sailors varsity football team’s scheduled homecoming game against Riverside High School of Yonkers. The fields will not reopen before the varsity football team’s next game, away at Brewster High School.

The district has been in contact with its insurance carrier to see what, if any, of the damage will be covered. Officials are also working with New York State Troopers to find the responsible parties.
