Hen Hud Teams Raise Funds for Breast Cancer at Homecoming

MONTROSE, N.Y. – Over 50 balloons were released during halftime of Hendrick Hudson High School’s homecoming game in honor of those who fought, and who fight, against breast cancer. The first Hendrick Hudson Athletes Support Breast Cancer fundraiser held pink games for varsity teams through the week and tags were sold for the balloons released on homecoming game night.

Meg Greiner, a high school athletic trainers said, “I was surprised how many of the kids wanted the pink. It’s good for them to understand there’s something that needs our support.” She continued, “A lot of the kids were excited,” asking, “‘Can I get a wristband?’ ‘Can I wear this in memory of my grandma?’”

All of the varsity teams helped raise funds, garnering over $500 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation through balloon tag sales and donations.

While Furfaro hasn’t been directly affected by breast cancer, she said she can understand wanting people who understand nearby. “When my parents weren’t together, my friend, her parents weren’t together. It was really helpful to have someone there for me,” said cheerleader Danielle Furfaro. “It was very nice to understand what other people are feeling,” and, she added, “to have hope for them.”
