Hen Hud Chorus Students Perform at Carnegie Hall

MONTROSE, N.Y. – Two Hendrick Hudson High School students will perform in the Stern Auditorium of Carnegie Hall with Grammy Award-winning choral composer Eric Whitacre.

The pair of chorus students submitted individual YouTube audition videos to be accepted as part of the more than 200 person choral group through Distinguished Concerts International- New York.

“The waiting list is like a mile long," said Claire Leyden, a soprano vocalist. "It’s incredible how hard it is get in.”

Sunwha Reiner, an alto, will be performing with her best friend Leyden on April 1 at 8:30 p.m.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been to Carnegie Hall, so to perform there is such an honor,” said

The two girls are part of Hendrick Hudson High School’s Treble Maker’s Women Choir, along with Treble Maker Clarice Mayo.

“This is a tremendous honor for both of them,” said Erica Denler, the high school chorus director.  “It has been a year of outstanding musical achievements for Claire and Sunwha and I can’t think of a better way of rounding out the year then with a performance at Carnegie Hall.”

The girls will learn about 45 minutes of music from a repertoire with which they are very familiar. As fans of Whitacre’s, the girls were looking up concerts to attend in New York when they found a link to the online auditions.

“They’re definitely challenging. Eric Whitacre, is famous for his dissonance,” said Reiner about the repertoire. “I’m really excited. We’ve been working on it for a while. It’ll be a challenge to memorize them, but it’ll be good.”

Both girls, who are graduating this year, said they intend to put the performance on their resumes. Leyden said she is uncertain of what she will pursue in college, but Reiner said she has applied for music education.

“I’m not sure where I’m going yet, but I’m going to hear back April 1, which is the concert day, so that’s a good day for me,” said Reiner.
