Get to Know Your Croton Crossing Guards

Everyday school day, rain or shine, Susanne Corveddu is on Maple Street in Croton, between Olcott Avenue and Old Post Road South. She greets each child by name, and there is a high likelihood that Corveddu, or one of her four coworkers in the Village of Croton, escorts your child across the street each day.

Corveddu is a crossing guard, a position that’s officially part of the Croton Police Department. “I like kids, I think they’re cute,” said Corveddu about why she likes being a crossing guard. “And I get to be with my kids.” Corveddu has summers and afternoons off to spend with her five children, two boys and three girls, all between the ages of 13 and 22.

“I ask about their games, and everyone in town is nice,” she said. A 17-year resident of Croton, Corveddu’s children also attended Croton schools. She has been on the job for three years, but ask what she doesn’t like about her job and she will reply, “bad hair days.”
