“I was really pumped up by all the books on the shelves in our school library,” said Claire Hilbert, a PTA volunteer who started the effort last year. “I thought the kids probably didn’t have enough time to explore all of these great books.”
The PTA began the expeditions last year to teach students how to find books of interest and teach them how fiction and non-fiction books are organized differently.
Students used a specially laid-out map with arrows on the ground to discover the sections carrying books featuring topics ranging from pets to volcanoes and more.
Hilbert read Julie Cummins' “The Inside-Outside Book of Libraries” to teach students about the different types of libraries throughout the world, including the Library of Congress and small mobile libraries.
Participating students received stickers for successfully finding books and also took home a donated book to read with their families.
