CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Hendrick Hudson High School student Paul Hartigan has a passion for baseball and he wants to share it with his community.
With the help of fellow students, he created a nonprofit organization called For the Love of Baseball. This emerging organization’s goal is to provide baseball-related information and resources to children and young adults.
Some of the team’s objectives include collecting new and used sports equipment, as well as books and DVDs about baseball to distribute among low-income areas in the Northeast. They also plan to publish monthly opinion pieces on current baseball news and to develop baseball trivia tests online to get young people interested in the sport.
“We believe it is important for our kids to do community service to give back to others,” said Karen Hartigan, Paul’s mother. “The foundation was one way Paul could give back while sharing his passion for baseball.”
Paul and his friends currently are collecting used sports equipment to donate toward Let’s Play it Forward, a student-run organization based in Somers. Collection boxes have been placed at the Premier Athletic Club and Hendrick Hudson High School. They plan to drop another box off at Blue Mountain Middle School.
Donors also can send emails to firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange for pick-up of equipment.
