Better Schools Bonanza Awards Carrie E. Tompkins $500

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – A $500 check was presented to Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary PTA co-chair, Maria Slippen, from Main Street Connect, on Tuesday morning. The $500 was part of Main Street Connect’s “Better Schools Bonanza,” which automatically gives $500 to any school able to reach 500 votes on a town homepage.

“We started this contest with schools in mind and we know times are tough,” said associate publisher of Main Street Connect, Cathleen Stack. Main Street Connect is the publisher of The Daily Croton. “Schools are the life blood of the community and we like to give back to our community."

Main Street Connect plans to give out 45 checks for $500 during the “Better Schools Bonanza.” The votes are still rolling in for the winner of the “Better Schools Bonanza,” which will award one school $10,000 for the most votes, and $1,000 for second place.

Slippen said the money would go to fund enrichment programs in the district’s one elementary school. “We fund the costumes that kids wear,” she said about performing arts programming. We fund the colonial fair.” Slippen added that a great example of enrichment programming was the wigwam recently built in the Croton Arboretum.

Barry Keegan, Native American crafts expert, built a wigwam and used various Native American crafts to show fourth grade students how Native Americans lived on the same land.

“Some things are reoccurring items, some things are one time requirements,” said Slippen. “So, it helps supplement the needs in the classroom."

Principal Kelly Maloney and Croton-Harmon Board of Education President Karen Zevin were also present for the check presentation.
