Led by John Munson, a self-proclaimed "radio geek," the class focused on the department's radio systems, the county's radio systems, general communications, Croton Fire Department radio guidelines, urgent and mayday calls and medical helicopter landing procedures, according to a statement from fire officials.

After sitting through a lecture delivered by Munson, firefighters in attendance then took turns relaying radio messages to demonstrate how easy it is for radio transmissions to become "lost in translation," according to officials.

The training event was part of a Department Training Division's initiative to offer Croton firefighters and others in the department refresher training on common procedures and operations and on frequently- and infrequently-used equipment, officials said.
