11 Blocking Algonguin Pipeline Entrances Arrested In Verplanck

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Nearly a dozen protestors have been arrested for blocking entrances to the Algonquin pipeline construction site, state police said.

Early Monday, police hauled off 11 people who refused to leave the sites on Broadway and on 9th Street in Verplanck.

Protesters have been trying to shut down Spectra Energy’s massive project, which will bring natural gas from Pennslyvania to New England and run through Rockland and Westchester counties.

Among their concerns is the pipeline’s proximity to the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed state agencies to conduct an independent safety review of the pipeline project and they have written to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission asking that the pipeline project be suspended for now.

The protesters were charged with disorderly conduct, a violation, for, police said, failing to obey their orders to leave.

They were all released and ordered to appear in the Town of Cortlandt Justice Court on Friday, March 11, police said.
