Paul J. Scaffer, Longtime Cortlandt Resident, 83

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. -- Paul J. Schaffer, a longtime Cortlandt Manor resident, died Saturday. He was 83.

He was born in Tarrytown on Feb. 5, 1932, the son of the late Nicholas and Julia (nee Lemeiux) Schaffer.

Schaffer was a graduate of Ossining High School and Westchester Community College. He was part of the largest draft of the Korean War, having registered with Draft Board 12 of Peekskill and serving in the U.S. Army from 1952-54.

On Oct. 6, 1956 at Holy Trinity Church in Yonkers, he married Edith G. D'Allessandro, who predeceased him in 2001.

Schaffer worked for 25 years at Union Carbide, retiring in 1994 as senior lab technician. His pastime was taken up by building a home, hunting, fishing and gardening.

He was a member of St. Christopher's Church, Buchanan; and a member of the Putnam Valley chapter of the New York State Grange.

Schaffer is survived by his son and daughter, Paul A. (Maria Chiarino-) Schaffer and Ann M. (Kevin) Begany; and also his three grandsons, Ryan and Dylan Begany, and Nicholas Schaffer. He also is survived by his sister, Patricia Bryant, his sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the E.O. Curry Funeral Home, Peekskill.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Christopher's Church, Buchanan, followed by interment in the Assumption Cemetery, Cortlandt Manor.
