August 'Gus' Michel, 86, Cortlandt WWII Veteran

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – August "Gus" Frederick Michel, a Cortlandt Manor resident since 1955, died July 3. He was 86. 

Michel was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Munich, Germany. His family moved to the U.S. in 1927 and he grew up in the Bronx, N.Y. In 1943, Michel enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an aviation machinist mate aboard the USS Franklin D.Roosevelt during World War II. 

On July 6, 1947, Michel married Ruth O. Dauenheimer. Following the war, he worked as a butcher for A & P stores for 40 years before retiring. Michel then worked for the Lakeland School District for 10 years. 

He was a life member of the Lake Mohegan Volunteer Fire Department and a foster parent. 

Michel is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Lynn Michel; three sons, Stephen, Richard and Frederick Michel; a sister, Inge DiTeri; and three grandchildren. A son, Larry, died on Jan. 3, 2012. He was also predeceased by a sister, Ellen Stevenson. 

Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at E.O. Curry Funeral Home in Peekskill, where funeral services will immediately follow.
