Alexander Gellman, 88, Croton WWII Veteran, Actor

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Alexander Gellman of Croton-on-Hudson died Dec. 7. He was 88.

Born March 18, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Joseph and Rose Shulman Gelman. Raised in Brooklyn, he attended local schools. Gellman served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Italy during World War II.

In 1965, he married Barbara Takel. After living in New York City for several years, they moved to Croton-on-Hudson in 1971. Gellman was employed as director of computer operations for the American Stock Exchange until his retirement in 1987.

After retirement, he started a second career as an actor and model, appearing in many print ads and commercials until he retired a second time in 2002. He spent his time volunteering, reading and gardening.

Gellman is survived by his wife; two sons, Jason (Monica), of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jonathan (Robin), of Gilbert, Ariz.; two brothers, David, of New York City, and Morrie (Marisa), of Palm Desert, Calif.; five grandchildren; and a step-grandson. He was predeceased by two sisters, Sally Weise and Esther Kaye; and a brother, Arthur.

Edward F. Carter Funeral Home in Croton is handling the arrangements. There will be a memorial service for the family at a later date.
