CORTLANDT, N.Y. A Yorktown man was arrested Friday by New York State Police in Cortlandt and charged with stealing jewelry valued at more than $25,000 from private homes in Cortlandt and Putnam Valley.
Robert J. Kinsella, 28, was charged with two counts of third-degree grand larceny, class D felonies, after a lengthy investigation that led to his apprehension as he tried to flee the state, police said.
According to police, a friend of Kinsella was contracted to do work at residences in Cortlandt and Putnam Valley, and Kinsella used keys he obtained unknowingly from his friend to commit the larcenies in the homes. Police said the unidentified friend was not aware of the crimes until he was confronted by them.
The investigation and arrest were handled by state police Investigators John Shaugnessy and Sean Morgan. Police are continuing to investigate to determine if there were any other victims.
Police said Kinsella has active warrants out of Yonkers and North Carolina on unrelated matters. He was remanded to Putnam County Jail. If convicted, he could face up to seven years in prison on each count.
