Wintery Events Around Cortlandt

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Events this weekend focus on the coming of the holiday season, from outdoor walking tours which highlight Brinton Brook bird sanctuary, to candlelight tours of the Van Cortlandt Manor house.

Friday, Dec. 9

Traditional Christmas Music with Maryknoll Choir The Maryknoll Choir, including the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, Maryknoll Sistes and Maryknoll Lay Commissioners and separate children’s choir will perform traditional Christmas and religious music. The performance will take place at Our Lady Queen of Apostles Chapel, 55 Ryder Road, Ossining, at 8 p.m. Admission is free and “neighbors of all faiths” are welcome. Hudson Valley Writers’ Center MFA Showcase See groups of students from Sarah Lawrence College, New York University and Columbia University present some of the best new work. The event begins at 7:30 p.m., at the Hudson Valley Writers’ Center, 300 Riverside Drive, Sleepy Hollow. Admission is free, contact admin@writerscenter.org for more information.

Saturday, Dec. 10

Attract Winter Birds at Your Feeder Learn about different seeds and feeders that attract winter birds, a question and answer will be held after the presentation. The event is sponsored by the Sawmill River Audubon, and is free and open to the public. The event begins at 10 a.m.

Candlelight Tour of Van Cortlandt Manor A guide carrying a candlelit lantern will bring guests through the Manor House and the Ferry House, there will be live music in both locations, and treats served afterwards. Guests are encouraged to dance to fiddle music in the Ferry House. There will also be storytelling. The event begins at 4 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. Tickets are $14 for adults, $6 for children ages 5 to 17, and free for those under 5. Historic Hudson Valley members receive a $5 discount on tickets.

Santa Claus at Croton County Gardens Santa Claus will be at Croton Country Gardens to greet kids throughout the day. Croton Country Garden is located at 1360 Albany Post Road, Croton-on-Hudson, call (914) 271-5129 for more information.

Walk Through Brinton Brook This guided two-hour walk over moderate terrain will look for signs of the season in plants and animals. The group will meet in the main parking lot of the sanctuary at 9 a.m. Children under 18 are free, adults are suggested to donate $5. Jewish Holiday Sale Temple Beth Abraham is sponsoring a Jewish holiday sale. Sellers will offer a variety of gifts, handbags, jewelry, Judaica, clothing, stationary and handmade tallit from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 25 Leroy Ave., Tarrytown.
