What's Happening This Week in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Cortlandt has plenty of opportunities to be civically involved, or to enjoy their community with free and informative classes given by area libraries. Here are some of our picks for events for the week.

Monday, March 26

Croton Budget Workshop: 7:30 p.m. The Village of Croton-on-Hudson Board of Trustees will gather at to discuss the newly proposed budget for fiscal year 2012-2013. The budget includes a proposed tax rate increase of 6.76 percent. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., at the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building, located at 1 Van Wyck St., Croton-on-Hudson.

Homework Help: 3-5 p.m. A New York State Certified teacher will be available at the Croton Free Library to help students, Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The library is located at 171 Cleveland Drive, Croton-on-Hudson.

Tuesday, March 27

Deer Resistant Gardening Class: 7 p.m. If you’ve resigned yourself to seeing your evergreens eaten down to sticks, this class is for you. Professional landscape designed Laura McKillop shows the audience aesthetically pleasing alternatives to plants that prove to be “deer candy.” This class is sponsored by the Croton Conservation Advisory Council and will begin at 7 p.m., at the Croton Free Library.

Fiction Writing Workshop: 7 p.m. David Carraturo, author of “Cameron Nation: Going All-In to Save His Country and Columbus Avenue Boys,” leads a fiction writing workshop at Hendrick Hudson Free Library focusing on devising story lines, researching subject matter and incorporating personal experiences into fiction. Attendees must preregister, call 914-739-5654, the library is located at 185 Kings Ferry Road, Montrose.

Wednesday, March 28

Croton Budget Workshop: 7:30 p.m. The Village of Croton Board of Trustees will gather to review the proposed budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m., at the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building.

Hendrick Hudson School Board Meeting: 7:30 p.m. Updates will be given on the budgeting process, the district must find $2.8 million in savings, and the board says almost all of those savings will come from staff. The meeting will take place at Hendrick Hudson High School, located at 2166 Albany Post Road, Montrose.

Thursday, March 29

Cortlandt Planning Board Work Session: 7 p.m. The Cortlandt Planning Board will meet to discuss new developments in the town, including the development of the “Croton Egg Farm” property, located on Apple Hill Drive. The meeting begins at 7 p.m., the board will meet at Cortlandt Town Hall, located at 1 Heady St., Cortlandt.
