Water Main Breaks: No Water in Half Moon Bay, Harmon

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – A 12-inch water main supplying the Harmon area and Half Moon Bay residents of the Village of Croton broke just after 5 a.m.

The water main is under the Route 9 overpass at Municipal Place. Officials said as far as they are aware, the water is safe and potable, but they are warning customers to run their faucets until the water is clear if they are experiencing brown water problems.

The foot-wide main serves Half Moon Bay, the Harmon area of the village and Metro North’s Croton-Harmon train yard. Officials said police received several calls on the matter and the Harmon areas of the village were experiencing a “lack of water.”

Locations uphill from the break also were experiencing poor water pressure and lack of water because of the break in the system. Officials say Pierre Van Cortlandt Middle School and Croton-Harmon High School had “insufficient” water and were on a two-hour delay because of the break.

Officials said the water department successfully restored water to the schools and upper village by 9:30 a.m., but, by late morning, Half Moon Bay and the Croton-Harmon train yard still do not have water. Water service is estimated to be restored by early evening, officials said.

Officials said other areas may be experiencing brown water problems because of the scouring action that takes place during pressure changes. The village will send out an update on the water main break will be sent out at 4 p.m. via email and phone. Check back with The Daily Croton for the latest updates.

The 12-inch main is part of an aging system currently being redesigned by the village. The village proposed adding a second main under Elliot Way, where the current water main break is located.

The second main for “West of Route 9” customers provides a "a back up supply line to feed Half Moon Bay and Metro North," officials said in a release sent out Monday morning. The current year’s capital budget includes money for a water main extension.
