Two-Acre Brush Fire on Amalfi Drive in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Montrose Fire Department and Buchanan Engine Company firefighters had an approximately 2-acre brush fire in Cortlandt Manor nearly extinguished as of 3 p.m. Tuesday. Montrose Fire Department Chief Ken Gilleo said it’s unclear how the fire started but dry conditions likely aided its ignition.

“With the heat and how dry it’s been, this could be one of those seasons,” Gilleo said. He said the Montrose Fire Department was dispatched with the Buchanan Engine Company just after 2 p.m. to a wooded area behind residences on Amalfi Drive in Cortlandt. Gilleo said approximately 15 firefighters were working on extinguishing the fire as of 3 p.m.

The fire took place behind the residences at 11 and 15 Amalfi Drive, near Washington Street in Cortlandt Manor. Firefighters hiked hoses in behind the residences, up a steep, wooded embankment to get to the fire.

Residents did not wish to comment on the fire. Gilleo said it did not appear residents had anything to do with the ignition of the fire.
