Town of Cortlandt Could Soon Have a Facebook Page

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – The Town of Cortlandt is considering starting a Facebook page to help disseminate information quickly to town residents and “friends” of the town. The town will hear a presentation on how it could use Facebook on Monday.

At least one town council member, Ann Lindau, has apprehensions about using the social media giant, after New York State Sen. Greg Ball (R-Cortlandt) was criticized for deleting comments by Nicole Katz, wife of New York State Assembly member Steve Katz (R-Yorktown).

“I just want to understand a little more about it. I’m personally not on it and I’m not sure that we need to be on it,” she said. “I don’t understand the benefit of it for a person. I guess if you show pictures to your family and stuff like that, but I already get that on email.”

Lindau said she is concerned the town will be liable for critical comments posted on the Facebook page. Facebook supporters, however, said the website would be another tool for to help the town communicate with its residents.

“Facebook, in my opinion, will be a faster way to inform the residents in Cortlandt of what's going on in their government and will provide us another way to post important notices and information," said Linda Puglisi, Cortlandt Town supervisor. "A staff committee, including our IT employee, will be developing a policy."

Matt Logerfo, the town’s technology advisor, will give Monday’s presentation at 7 p.m.
