Thousands Walk for Autism Research in White Plains

Thousands of family, friends and supporters laced up their sneakers to raise money and awareness for autism research at the10th annual Walk Now for Autism Speaks at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains Sunday.

More than 14,000 people registered for the two-mile walk, many walking as part of teams organized for a certain individual. Organizers said the goal of raising $1.1 million would likely be met.

Autism, which is a complex brain disorder that often inhibits a person's ability to communicate or form relationships with others, affects 1 in 110 children and is typically diagnosed at a young age. Boys are four times more likely than girls to have autism and there is no medical detection or cure for the disability.
