The Croton Arboretum to Host Garden Tour

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.-- The Jane E. Lytle Memorial Arboretum in Croton will host its 15th Annual Garden Tour through Croton and Cortlandt on July 10, featuring everything from traditional rose-studded English berry and shrub gardens to the community garden at Silver Lake.

“We help protect,” said Marc Cheshire, a member of the board for the Croton Arboretum, “an important wetland, up near the golf course.” The garden tour, which will also have a plant sale this year, represents the single biggest fundraiser for the volunteer-operated arboretum. Through such fundraisers it has been able to install boardwalks and gazebos in the 20 plus acre park.

The Arboretum property is now managed and operated through the Croton Arboretum and Sanctuary Incorporated, after coming into village ownership after it was originally deeded to a different conservation association, according to Marc Cheshire, who is also a member of the Croton Friends of History.

The Arboretum also hosts educational activities through the Croton Free Library, and in conjunction with local schools. The self-guided garden tour of a half dozen locations in Croton and Cortlandt will take place between 12:30 and 5 p.m., and costs $20 per person, or a two person special for $35. Only 200 tickets will be sold, and reservations are available through Laurie Salzberg, 271-5871, or Lisa Cohen, 827-9805. Any remaining tickets will be sold July 10 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, 6 Old Post Road, Croton.
