Telephone Poles Snap in Half on Lower Brook Street

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Croton Fire Department and Con Edison officials could be seen Monday afternoon at the bottom of Brook Street, as fire department officials attempted to keep transformer oil from leaking into storm drains, and inevitably ending up in the Hudson River.

“Con Ed was on the scene, and that’s when they noticed it,” said Thomas “Tex” Dinkler about the transformer oil.

Con Edison officials were in the process of de-energizing power lines on Brook Street Monday afternoon. Lines on Brook Street are considered “primary lines” and carry an especially large electricity load.

Brook Street was one street, out of many in Croton, hit especially hard by Saturday’s snowstorm, which brought heavy wet snow to the area. Two telephone poles were snapped in half during the storm, at the bottom of Brook Street near Riverside Avenue, leaving wires tangled along the street.

Although there was a large tree resting on the wires, the sequence of events leading to the telephone poles breaking in half remains unclear, Con Ed workers said.

Residents should treat all wires as if they’re live wires, and stay away from wires in the street. Outages should be reported to Con Edison, at 1-800-75-Con-Ed. As of Monday evening, about a quarter of the Village of Croton is still without power. Con Edison officials are estimating power will be restored to all residents by Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 11:59 p.m.
