PEEKSKILL, NY-- Thirty sluggers stepped up to the plate to swing for the fences at the Second Annual Home Run Derby at Peekskill Stadium Friday night to benefit Support Connection.
Each competitor paid $25 for 10 chances to launch a baseball out of the park in the challenging confines of Peekskill Stadium, which measures 310 down the left and right field lines and 325 in dead center. The high fences also provide an obstacle.
"You really have to hit one 350 feet to get it out," said Carlos Iglesias, who managed to muscle one home run to left center.
Mike Imbriale, a former John F. Kennedy High School player, slugged two home runs, which led the pack.
Support Connection Executive Director Katherine Quinn, who noted Saturday was the 15th anniversary of the Yorktown-based organization opening it doors to people affected by breast and ovarian cancer, said the Home Run Derby was an avenue for men to show their support for a cause that primarily benefits women.
Quinn said the good natured event also serves as a lead-in to Support Connection's largest fundraiser each year, Support-A-Walk, at FDR State Park in Yorktown, which this year will take place on Sunday, October 2, starting at 9 a.m.
(For the record, this reporter was one of the 30 sluggers in the Home Run Derby who hacked away, hitting one shot to the base of the wall in left field. Not bad for a 46-year-old. Not bad at all.)
