ALBANY, N.Y. The New York State Police have issued an advisory to motorists going into the Labor Day weekend. Troopers are encouraging vacationers and travelers to double check their travel routes prior to weekend travel to ensure that their intended destinations are safe to visit and able to be reached via safe travel routes.
Numerous primary and secondary roads in the eastern half of New York State were affected by flooding resulting from Tropical Storm Irene. Travelers are encouraged to call their intended destinations to get updated local information and use www.511ny.org or dial 511 on the phone, to get up-to-date travel information along the length of their intended travel routes.
In some areas hardest hit by the recent storm and subsequent flooding, roads are dangerously damaged and bridges and roads are closed, according to police. Unnecessary travel in such areas may hamper emergency response and repair efforts that are currently ongoing.
For updated travel information motorists can check the department of transportation website,
the New York State Thruway website and motorists can also call 1-800-Thruway (847-8929) for travel information.
