State of the Union Highlights Local Partisan Split

President Barack Obama will give his third State of the Union address Tuesday night and local delegates, like much of the country, are split between anticipation and frustration at what the president could propose.

“I think that we’re hoping Obama’s going to focus on job creation and without cutting needed services people have come to depend upon," said Lisa Cohen, vice chair of the Croton Democratic Committee. "We are supporting him and will be petitioning for the candidate and local delegates.”

According to a preview of the State of the Union address, given on the White House’s website by senior advisor David Plouffe, the speech will focus on "fair play" in the economy. The president will likely focus on middle class jobs and manufacturing.

An enhanced speech will be available on the White House website, with graphs and statistics available during the speech. People can discuss the speech live on Twitter using “#SOTU.” The speech will be followed by a panel discussion that people can participate on through Twitter and Facebook.

“Foreign policy’s very important to me, and he’s not going to change that because of his proposals a few weeks ago about cutting the military,” said Suzanne Sadofsky, chair of the Cortlandt Republican Committee. “I would imagine most of my committee, without polling anybody, feels the same way especially about the military.”

Sadofsky was quick to note she only speaks for her own opinions and that the Republican Committee has not held a meeting to discuss presidential politics.

Susan Konig, the chair of the Croton Republican Committee, said the Croton Republican Committee prefers not to comment on national politics.
