State of Emergency Declared in Cortlandt

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. – Cortlandt Town Supervisor, Linda Puglisi, has declared a state of emergency in the Town of Cortlandt after a freak October snowstorm. The supervisor cited 20 closed roads in the town, and 15 passable by only one lane because of fallen trees, limbs and wires as reasons for declaring a state of emergency.

“Our region has been hit hard by hurricane Irene and now this severe snowstorm. We will have to continue to do everything we can to help our residents during these difficult weather events,” wrote Puglisi in her announcement of the state of emergency.

Officials estimated that Irene, which hit in late August, cost the town about $120,000.

Town crews continue to wait on Con Edison to de-energize wires so tree work can be done on town roads. Puglisi suggests calling Con Edison to report outages. All wires should be treated as if they are live.

Puglisi also suggested attending a town-sponsored Halloween party, to avoid walking on dark streets with hanging limbs and power lines. There will be games, contests and prizes as well as apple cider and donuts at the Muriel H. Morabito Community Center, on West Brook Drive in Cortlandt Manor.

Con Edison estimates that over 5,000 people in Cortlandt are still without power Monday afternoon, about 43 percent of Con Edison’s customers served. Con Edison has 12,295 customers in the Town of Cortlandt. This number has dropped since Sunday afternoon.
