Small Businesses Come Together for Shop Cortlandt Week

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Friday marks the beginning of “Shop Cortlandt Week,” nine days of discounts at locally owned and operated Cortlandt businesses, which Town of Cortlandt officials hope will encourage residents to shop locally in the spirit of Earth Day weekend.

Local garden shops say competition is fierce with big box store garden departments, but two Croton garden shop owners say they offer one thing giant department stores can’t—know how.

“They’re not just coming here for a commodity, per se, but for the service,” said Brian Panessa, owner of Hilltop Farms, located just north of the “Montrose” exit on Route 9a. “What differentiates us from a plant materials store is we have everything.”

Danny Inzano, better known as “Cookie,” owner of Croton Country Gardens, says that quality and personal service are number one. He said his “45 years of knowledge” and plants grown locally are what distinguish him from big box stores, where plants can be shipped from far-off nurseries.

The 33 businesses participating in Shop Cortlandt Week range from restaurants and shoe shops to wine stores and beauty salons, all offering discounts between 5 and 20 percent for simply shopping between Friday, April 20, to Sunday, April 29.

To participate in raffles, residents can pick up a reusable shopping bag at Cortlandt Town Hall with a list of the 33 participating businesses and a stamp card. After customers shop at six of the participating businesses, the card can be dropped off to Cortlandt Town Hall to enter a raffle for prizes.

Supervisor Linda Puglisi will be at Hilltop Farms in Cortlandt on Friday to kick off the week.

Information bags are also available at the Croton Free Library, the Hendrick Hudson Free Library, the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce and Cortlandt Youth Center during normal business hours.

Businesses participating in “Shop Cortlandt Week” include Annuzzelli’s Pizza, Applebee’s, Barnes and Noble, Buchanan Home Center, CDM International Beauty Salon, Cortlandt Farm Market, Croton Country Gardens, Deprez Wines and Spirits, Feed the Birds!, Funflatables, Gaetano’s Italian Grille, GalliMods Hobby and Gift Shop, Green Growler Grocery, Groovy on Grand Design Studio and Retail, Hilltop Farms, Homescape Kitchens and Bath, Homestead Floral, India House Restaurant, It’s SWAK, Le Petite Spa, Lou’s Corner, Old Navy, Party Stop, Sansotta Brothers, ShopRite, Subway, Tenampa The Cutting Edge, The Reiki Company, The Rugged Boot and Shoe, Trinkets Jewelry and Two Brothers Trattoria.
