Second Community Garden Proposed in Croton

The Croton Village Board of Trustees floated the idea of a second Community Garden during a work session Monday night. The proposal was made by Niall Kelleher, a member of the current Community Garden near Silver Lake.

Kelleher proposed placing the second garden near the backside of the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building, which faces Brook Street’s 100 block, at the top of the hill. “We’ll take any space we can get that has sun and is free of deer,” said Kelleher. “We’re like guerilla gardeners.”

The estimates for the cost of the second garden varied widely, as did proposals by various village trustees as to where the garden should be placed. An idea for collaboration between the Carrie E. Tompkins Elementary School in Croton and the community garden was suggested.

Kelleher called the first Community Garden a “pilot program,” which has gone very well. Kelleher also mentioned the garden’s funding depends largely on the resources available to prospective garden members.
