Santa Answers Cortlandt Residents' Letters

CORTLANDT, N.Y. – Boys and girls mailing letters to Santa Claus, and hoping for a reply, will receive one if they mail their letters to Cortlandt Town Hall before Dec. 19. The town hall receives over 100 letters addressed to Mr. Kringle every year.

“A trip to the moon, he said he thought he might pass Santa flying by… and he could wave to him,” said Jon Jacoby, Recreation Department Supervisor, who answers letters for Santa Claus, recalling one request he received in 2010.

Jacoby was tasked with answering letters to the jolly North Pole resident four years ago, and said he was initially confounded at how he would answer so many letters. “Wow. How am I going to do this? How am I going to keep every one a little different?” said Jacoby.

Eventually the director created a system to answer each letter with an individual touch. Jacoby said most kids ask about the reindeer, and how Rudolph is doing, and to please say hello. Other concerns include how Santa will find their home, and how he will get in if the children don’t have chimneys.

Santa is frequently asked, said Jacoby, for modern electronic items, like iPods or iPads, and flat screen TVs.

Many children are also conscientious, asking Santa to make their family members feel better, or admitting perhaps they weren’t as good as they could have been. “I get a lot that say, ‘I wasn’t really that good a boy or girl, but I do pick on my little brother and little sister. And I give mommy and daddy a hard time, but I’ll do better,” said Jacoby.

Anyone wishing to write a letter to Santa can send it to Cortlandt Town Hall, at 1 Heady St., Cortlandt Manor, 10567, by Dec. 19 for a reply. Letters sent by mail to the town hall can be addressed to “Santa Claus.”  There is also a special mail box for letters to Santa in the main part of the town hall. Please give a return address.
