Police Search for Cortlandt Manor Break-in Suspect

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. -Police from three departments were searching Thursday afternoon for a man they said was stopped from breaking into a house by the frightened homeowner.

Richard Casey said a man had removed a screen door from its track and was trying to get into the house when his wife startled him and he ran away.

"When she came in through the kitchen he was shaking the storm door trying to get it open," Casey said.

Sgt. James Kranik of the New York State Police described the suspect as 35 to 40 years-old, about 5'9", weighing about 130 pounds with light hair. He was wearing a gray sweatshirt and dark jacket.

Kranik said hounds that were tracking the man's trail lost his scent, which leads police to believe someone may have picked up the man,

Officers from the Putnam County Sherriff’s Department, New York State Police and the Westchester County Police were searching for the man in the area of Old Oregon Road on the border of Putnam Valley.

Maura Delaney, who has lived in the area for 12 years, said she was surprised by the incident and added that nothing like that had ever happened there before.
